Familiarise students with the basics of information retrieval.
Contents
The course introduces the basic concepts of information retrieval and the central functions of the field: types of databases and the structure and retrieval methods of document databases; the characteristics of natural language and their impact on information retrieval; conceptual analysis of query topics; matching techniques: exact and partial matching and Boolean logic, search key weighting and the sorting value of documents, and relevance order defined based on them; the evaluation methods of the results of information retrieval; the characteristics of web information retrieval; image and sound information retrieval; information retrieval of fictive and musical material; review of research on information retrieval.
