Students are required to have completed Basic Studies, and all relevant courses at the Subject Studies level (i.e. all A2 courses before a literature proseminar, and all A3 courses before a language proseminar).

Learning outcomes

To train students in the process of writing and presenting a research paper, leading to the production of a BA thesis/dissertation.

Contents

Attention is paid to the definition of a research problem, involving the formulation and presentation of a research plan, practice in the use of library resources and the gathering of materials, and the development of academic writing skills, including the use of appropriate referencing conventions and consideration of the nature and structure of a thesis.
During the proseminar term, the first period will include the presentation and discussion of students’ research plans, and a number of background readings. The second period will be mainly devoted to the presentation and discussion of students’ papers.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Numeric 1-5.
On the basis of the paper and contribution to the proseminar. Credit for the proseminar is not registered until the BA thesis and maturity test have been accepted.

Further information

The proseminar is open only to Tampere University students majoring in English Philology, for whom it is obligatory. It is intended to be taken in the third year of studies.
A number of proseminar groups in different subject areas are announced towards the end of the spring term for the following academic year, and students should then apply to join a group. After being accepted into a group, students should consult the teacher on the prospective research topic well before the proseminar begins.
