Learning outcomes

To introduce students to the central literature, literary and non-literary texts, themes and genres of the period, and to academic, theory-based ways of reading literary texts.

Contents

An overview of the concept of “America” and American literature from native traditions and the colonial period to the end of the 19th century in its historical, cultural and social contexts through the reading of a selection of representative texts.
Classes include lectures and follow-up tutorials, with small-group work based on the study materials.
