General description

The course corresponds to the English oral skills course in the following degrees:

- B.A., B.A. (Theatre and Drama)
- B.Sc.
- B.A. (Education)
- B.Sc. (Admin.)*
- Lic.Med., B.Sc. (Health Sciences)
- B.Soc.Sc., B.A. (Psych.)

*) Can correspond to the English Advanced Course (M.Sc. Admin.), if not included in Bachelor's degree.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course the students will be able to...

• use sources to research debate topics and prepare speeches
• construct arguments and use appropriate language in argumentative speech
• recognise and use rhetorical devices
• use language typical of debates
• give informative and persuasive speeches in well-structured manner
• evaluate and analyse arguments critically
• react to opposing arguments quickly
• function in groups according to the roles prescribed by the debating rules
• control timing when giving speeches

The course will go through...

• analysing and evaluating arguments
• analysing and evaluating speeches
• practising the structure and language in debates
• debates according to rules agreed to in class (the British Parliamentary or the Australs format)
• a debate competition

The course includes lectures, discussion, oral exercises, debates, researching online and library resources, and writing a debate blog.
