Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will be familiar with the basics of the foundations of the literary institution. The student will be able to analyse and interpret literature in a cultural and societal context. The student will be able to assess the cultural and societal significance of literature.

Contents

The course unit explores the structures of the literary institution, as well as the contemporary trends and basic concepts of research of the interaction of literature, culture, and society.
The teaching consists of lectures and supplementary reading. The student can complete the supplementary reading by either taking an exam or participating in a study group. Alternatively, the student can complete the whole course unit with a book exam.

Students completing the course unit as part of Common Core Studies will have to attend the lectures. Only students who will complete Basic Studies in Literary Studies or the Finnish Language and Literature study module in the Degree Programme in Educational Studies can complete the course unit by taking a written exam of 5 ECTS.
