General description
The course focuses on giving a presentation and writing an abstract. Students will also improve their oral communication skills in academic and professional situations relating to their own field and future profession. Students will become familiar with the conventions and cultural considerations associated with spoken production and interaction. In addition, students will develop communication confidence and team working skills.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
• prepare and deliver a discipline-specific, academic presentation that follows accepted norms and good academic practice • write an abstract • find and use resources to facilitate and support the above • present information clearly and convincingly • communicate with confidence within both academic and workplace contexts • work effectively in groups, negotiating and contributing to the completion of the tasks
Contents
To achieve the learning outcomes, students will
• become familiar with the characteristics of a good presentation • prepare and deliver an discipline-specific presentation and write an abstract of it • take part in small group discussions in their own field • practice providing and receiving feedback
