General description
The aim of the module is to assist the participating students in identifying their own academic and/or professional learning outcomes (in groups and/or individually), to help them structure a course of independent study to meet those outcomes, to provide ongoing guidance and support, and finally to assess with them the results of their learning.

Contents
The start of the course will cover needs analysis, setting learning outcomes, strategies and tools for independent learning as well as materials and means of assessment. Other contents will be determined by the learning outcomes determined by the participating students, but may, for example, include academic writing, presentation and discussion skills.
Teaching methods
The average student workload for a 2 credit course is 54 hours (2 x 27). The distribution of hours between classwork, tutorials, and independent work (e.g. in the Self Access Centre) will vary.
