Organised by
German
Preceding studies
Beginners' German Course II or equivalent skills (approximately 90 hours) (A1 language proficiency level).

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students will
- be able to communicate in everyday situations orally and in writing
- be able to use linguistic structures successfully in communication
- understand the main contents of texts concerning family, hobbies, work, studying, travelling and current events
- be able to write an entire text on a familiar subject, based on notes

Contents

Oral skills will be practiced in pairs and small groups by using authentic training material (listening comprehension exercises). Text comprehension and writing will be practiced through study material and newspaper articles. The course also teaches the most common linguistic structures, such as the use of co-ordinating and subordinative conjunctions (but, because, although and that). Adjective inflections and imperfect and present perfect tenses will be practiced in pairs and individually in class and at home through glossaries and explanations compiled by the teacher. In addition, there are online exercises available for independent studying.

Further information on prerequisites and recommendations

Students should contact the teacher if they are not sure about course levels. Students selected to the course must assess their own language skills before the course begins and independently take an exam testing the language proficiency level. The results will be delivered to the course teacher. Directions for self assessment can be found at www.uta.fi/laitokset/kielikeskus/CEF/, and the test at www.goethe.de/cgi-bin/einstufungstest/einstufungstest.pl.
