Learning outcomes

The course provides a portrait of contemporary Swedish culture and society in the way of its characterization in modern literary texts. An idea is formed on how literature, culture, and society have influnced Sweden from the 1950s to this day.

Contents

The course consists of overviews on the development of the Swedish society and culture in general, as well as on the changes in literary publicity from the 1950s to this day. The course involves the reading, discussion, and analysis of important literary texts (approx. 1000 pp of fictional prose, 20 pp of poetry, and 300 pp of non-fictional prose).

Teaching methods

Overviews on literature and the development of society. Literature discussions in small groups.

Modes of study

A project work on Swedish culture.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Numeric 1-5.
Pass for individual assignments. Based on active class participation and the project work.

Study materials

Novels, poetry, non-fictional prose.
