Preceding studies
Level A English in upper secondary school, or equivalent skills (B1-B2 level of language competence). To achieve the required starting level, students may for example take an English prep course.

Learning outcomes

After completing this study module, students will
- be able to discuss matters concerning themselves, their studies and their own field
- be able to interact with others for instance in group work situations, discussions, presentations and debates
- be aware of the cultural differences related to oral communication and know how to communicate in a manner appropriate to the situation
- be able to discuss newspaper articles using professional terminology
- be able to produce a printable article and during the writing process evaluate their own linguistic problems, use different models to solve them and discuss different ways of using language
- be able to analyse newspaper text types and find their specific linguistic features
- be able to analyse and criticise articles written by colleagues
These skills will help students in their studies and later in following their own field and improving professional international communication.

Contents

The objective of this course is to introduce students to the production, layout and contents of newspaper texts and to develop their abilities to express themselves logically both orally and in writing. Emphasis will be on the newspaper terminology used in different contexts, which will be acquired through various exercises. Students write an online article to itampere (http://www.itampere.info/). The majority of this course will be used for planning and drafting an article that is ready for print.
