KKEN4 English Reading and Writing Skills for Humanists 3 ECTS

Preceding studies
Level A English in upper secondary school, or equivalent skills (B1-B2 level of language competence). To achieve the required starting level, students may for example take an English prep course.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, students can
- understand general factual and scientific texts
- understand texts of their own field
- be able to write an application and a cv
- be able to write an essay

Contents

During this course, students will
- recognise the structure of academic text and the functions of its parts
- know how to utilise text structure and the clue words indicating semantic relations
- recognise and interpret the structures essential to understanding texts
- master terminology that is both universally scientific and essential to their own field
- become familiar with the meanings of prefixes and suffixes
- write an application and an essay

Modes of study

During the academic year, an optional test of written skills will be organised twice for students who already possess the language skills this course aims at. Those who pass the test will be exempted from the written skills course.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Numeric 1-5.
Evaluation by written final exam and regular and active participation in exercises.
