Learning outcomes
A student who has completed this course knows the basic concepts of statistics, understands the difference between the compilation of statistics and a sampling inspection, and knows the basics of the SPSS software. The student will comprehend the basic logic of statistical thinking and understand its meaning in empirical social research. The course offers an essential basis for learning quantitative research methods and enables the student to apply the basic methods of statistics. The course functions as an introduction to the department’s own courses on quantitative methods.

Topics to be covered: - statistical unit, variable, data matrix - multiresponse variables - the scales of a variable - data recording and correcting recording errors - the documentation of content and definition of missing data - variate transformations - simple and multiple distributions - mean, standard deviation and dependence - graphical presentation of results - statistical testing of results - determining the size of a sample
