Learning outcomes

To introduce students to the concepts of “Modernism” and “Americanness”, and the central literary texts, themes and genres of the time period. To further improve academic, theory-based ways of reading.

Contents

An overview of American literature from the beginning of the twentieth-century to the present day in its historical, cultural and social contexts, with special emphasis on the concepts of “Modernism”, “Postmodernism” and “Americanness”, through the reading of a selection of representative texts.
Classes include lectures and follow-up tutorials, with small-group work based on the study materials.
