General description

The course is organized by the two universities in Tampere, i.e. by the Technical University of Tampere (TUT) and the University of Tampere (UTA). The main emphasis of the TUT course is bacterial biotechnology and the UTA course is focusing on eukaryotic biotechnology.

Learning outcomes

After passing the course, the student is able to read scientific articles with required criticism and extract the relevant key points of the text and discuss them. He/she will get an overview of the newest trends in biotechnology. During the course, the student learns to summarize scientific articles in form of presentations, and respectively, listen and question presentations prepared by other students.

Modes of study

Full participation to the lectures. Each participant makes analyses of selected journal articles. Completion parts must belong to the same implementation The grade (0 = fail or 6 = pass) will be determined by the extent of self-initiative, diligence and activeness of the student during the course. Attendance in meetings is compulsory.

Recommended year of study

4. year spring

The course is organized every second year and it will be lectured in the academic year 2011-2012. The TUT part in period 2 is given by docent Urpo Lamminmäki, University of Turku during three consecutive days, four hours each. The UTA part is during the 3rd period in the Institute of Medical Technology (IMT) at the UTA. Lecture material consists of journal articles chosen by the teachers. Suitable for postgraduate studies.
