Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course unit, the student will understand the scope and field of community interpreting and will be able to work as a community interpreter in specific situations. The student will understand the roles and responsibilities of a community interpreter in various situations. They will understand the significance of preparation, memory, and note-taking in the work of a community interpreter. They will understand the meaning of ethics in the work of an interpreter. They will also be able to apply different interpreting strategies and analyse and justify their choices.

Contents

The course unit explores community interpreting as an activity, agents of community interpreting, and the educational opportunities in the field.
Furthermore, the course unit introduces the key topics in community interpreting, as well as various interpreting environments: education, social work, and health care (including mental health care). Further topics include interpreter's memory and note-taking techniques, and preparation for interpreting assignments from a community interpreter's point of view. The course unit also investigates ethical issues in the work of a community interpreter. The course unit includes interpreting exercises.
