Learning outcomes

After having completed the module the student is familiar with the canon and the main trends of mass communication research. She or he also understands in what ways the tradition of research in photography and visual journalism is connected to the wider field of research on mass communication. The student practices her or his knowledge in writing her or his Master’s thesis.

Contents

The main emphasis of the teaching will be on the development of the research field and the research traditions. Apart from them the students will get to know concrete research projects.

Teaching methods

Lectures on the theory and canon of communication (20 t). In connection to the lectures the students read articles in the journal Tiedotustutkimus and chapters in the books Habermas, Julkisuuden rakennemuutos. Vastapaino 2004 and Mörä, Salovaara-Moring & Valtonen (toim.), Mediatutkimuksen vaeltava teoria. Gaudeamus 2004. The breadth of the lectures and the additional readings will be 4 credit points.

Modes of study

Lectures (20hrs) and the above mentioned additional readings. In addition literature. The literature will be examined either as a) a literature exam on a joint examination day of the Faculty of Social Sciences, b) as an essay, or c) as study circle work concentrating on a particular theme. The breadth of the literature section will be 6 credit points.
