Learning outcomes

To introduce students to the methods used in Finnish language research, to presenting one’s own research material and to research reports.

Contents

Lectures (20 hrs) introduce the different fields of linguistic research, specifically from the point of view of collecting and reporting research material. In assignment classes (14 hrs) students devise an independent material collecting project based on a topic of their own group, which are a) sociolinguistic interview, b) expanding vocabulary and terminology, c) text and conversation analysis, and d) child language. Library personnel help students practice their information retrieval skills and use library databases and other material (4 hrs). A visit to The Research Institute for the Languages of Finland is a part of the course.
