Learning outcomes

After completing this study module, students will
- be able to discuss matters concerning themselves, their studies and their own field
- be able to interact with others for instance in group work situations, discussions, presentations and debates
- be aware of the cultural differences related to oral communication and know how to communicate in a manner appropriate to the situation
- be able to work in seminars and conferences as a presenter, chairperson, opponent, participant and a critic
- recognise and master the different manners of speech required by the different stages of conversation: starting a conversation, taking others into account, maintaining conversation, expressing interest and changing topics
- be able to form convincing arguments and defend their own opinions
- be able to hold a short academic presentation related to their own field of study
These skills will help students in their studies and later in following their own field and improving professional international communication.

Contents

The central part of this course is formed by students’ presentations from their own fields of study or profession, and of peer and group discussions concerning them. During this course, students will practise spontaneous and prepared speeches and learn how to express their opinions and objections. The language laboratory will be used, if students need more practice in pronunciation and linguistic structures. Conversation and presentation techniques will be practised as well. There will possibly be a visit to some organisation of a particular field.
