A5 Introduction to research methodology is a prerequisite for doing a practicum.

Learning outcomes

To introduce students to the different sectors of linguistics.

Contents

Students can take book exams in the following sectors: 1. Dialectology; 2. Discourse analysis; 3. Conversation analysis; 4. Language change; 5. Language pathology; 6. Cognitive semantics; 7. Child language; 8. Baltic-Finnic languages; 9. Morphophonology; 10. Onomastics; 11. Psycholinguistics; 12. Lexicology; 13. Sociolinguistics and the study of variation; 14. Finnish as a second or foreign language; 15. Analysis of everyday texts; 16. Approaches to the study of syntax. Units can be replaced with practicums. During a practicum students will produce a written assignment of approximately 10 pages in length and relevant to the practicum field. The topics change every term. Practicum assignments can be extended into Bachelor's theses (see study module A6). Other courses valid for Optional courses are seminars on specific topics or courses in General Linguistics, Phonetics or Estonian Language and Culture.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Numeric 1-5.
Understanding and applying the knowledge presented during the course. Evaluation criteria for practicums and specific seminars will be announced once the course begins.
