KKEN15 ACADEMIC ENGLISH FOR HEALTH SCIENCES 3 ECTS

Preceding studies
Level A English at upper secondary school, or equivalent skills (B1-B2 level of language competence). To achieve the required starting level, students may, for example, take an English preparatory course.

General description

This course is in accordance with the faculty requirements for a foreign language text comprehension course.

Learning outcomes

After completing this study module, students will
- understand the meaning of self-directed language learning as a part of academic competence
- understand the basics of academic communication
- understand the meaning of critical literacy when using literary sources
- understand spoken and written text of their own field
- be able to analyse the terminology and structure of spoken and written texts of their own fields
- be able to apply the tools used in information retrieval to language learning
- be able to write a presentation, abstract and summary of an academic article
- be able to hold a seminar presentation

Contents

During this course, students will
- assess their own language skills and make/update their personal development plan (especially pronunciation and grammar)
- analyse the structure of academic texts
- become familiar with word formation and pronunciation of scientific words
- analyse argumentations of academic text
- become familiar with the sources/programmes needed for producing English academic text (dictionaries, online writing labs, databases, RefWorks)
- write an abstract and a summary based on text analyses
- practice holding an academic presentation and the skills relevant to academic discussions
- hold a seminar presentation and participate in a discussing concerning it
This is an integrated course, with an emphasis on written communication.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Numeric 1-5.
Evaluation by a portfolio of written assignments, a seminar presentation, a vocabulary test and active participation.

Recommended year of study

First year of studies. It is recommended that this course be taken before the Professional English course, or concurrently.

The necessary materials will be available online through Moodle.

Further information

During the semester, an optional test will be organised for students who already possess the language skills this course aims at. Those who pass the test will be exempted from this course.
