VTEKS105 New Interaction Techniques 5 ECTS

General description

From academic year 2013-2014 the course will be 5 ECTS + 5 ECTS. See the course web page to check how old students may extend the 5 cr course to 10 credits during Spring term.

Learning outcomes

Course in 2013-2015:
After the course the student knows how to analyze, construct and evaluate the most important interaction techniques (e.g., spoken, embodied, and gaze-aware interaction).

Course 2012-2013 after the course the student:
- knows a number of models of human performance and can apply them in the analysis of interaction techniques
- is able to relate new research results to past research in the field.
- knows a number of classes of interaction techniques and a few examples in each class
- knows where to find and how to read research papers on interaction techniques
- can identify the relevance of effectiveness and efficiency in an interaction context
- can evaluate interaction techniques through methodological triangulation in a resource efficient way.
- has begun to develop the reading skills later needed in the Master’s thesis work.

Contents

Course in 2013-2015:
Methods and tools for analysis, construction and evaluation of novel interaction techniques. Experimental and user experience evaluation of interaction techniques. Implementation of an interaction technique (10 cu).

Course in 2012-2013:
The course introduces some new interaction techniques, technologies, and environments. The topics of the lectures include gaze-based interaction, tangible user interfaces, and large and small displays. In addition, a fourth topical theme may be included. Examples in these topics are discussed in relation to models of human performance to develop modeling skills that help in evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of interaction techniques.
