Learning outcomes

To gain understanding of how understanding of war and peacemaking have changed over past centuries
- The student learns what is understood as peace building in theory and in practice
- The students understands what is meant by democratic peace theory
- The students learns how human rights are attached to peace

Contents

This course examined the long term transformation of the understanding of “war” and “peace” and explains how peacemaking tools have changed since the beginning of the 19th century. The course start with introducing Imannuel Kant’s theory on perpetual peace and how this has influenced peace thinking for two centuries. The course gives attention to 19th century peace movememts, the League of Nation and the United Nations. Furthermore, it adopt critical approach democratic peace theory and human rights peace that have been dominating ideologies in post-Cold War era. The emerge of liberal peace building is examined and introduced the latest discussion about “hybrid peace” and “popular peace”. Phenomena like responsibility to protect, humanitarian intervention and liberal peace are explained.
