KKRU23 SWEDISH ORAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION-BIOTECHNOLOGY 3 ECTS

Preceding studies
A2-B1 language proficiency level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. To achieve the required starting level, it is recommended that students participate in a preparation course. Language skills may be tested in a written exam.

General description

This course is in accordance with the Finnish legislation Act 424/2003 on the knowledge of languages required of personnel in public bodies, Act 481/2003 on demonstrated proficiency in the Swedish and Finnish languages, and with Decree 794/2004 on university degrees.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students will be able to communicate appropriately in tasks concerning working life. Students will
- be able to read Swedish texts in their own field and find their main points
- be able to make use of Swedish sources of information independently for their own purposes
- be able to use resources and media to produce grammatically and structurally correct Swedish texts on their own fields
- understand discussions related to their own field
- be able to describe ordinary issues of their own field and express and justify their opinions on them

Contents

During this course, students will
- go through issues of their own special field both orally and in writing, expand their general vocabulary, and become familiar with the terminology of their own field
- retrieve information from written and oral sources
- write texts related to professional communication situations
- practice oral communication (telephone conversations, counselling, descriptions, summarising, etc.) and hold an oral presentation
- practice the use of linguistic tools and aids
- revise the central structures of grammar

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Numeric 1-5.
Evaluation by active participation. Evaluation of oral skills is based on continuous assessment, an oral presentation and an oral final examination. Written skills are assessed by the written assignments done during the course, and/or by a written final examination. Swedish oral and written skills will be marked separately on the degree certificate on a scale satisfactory or good (1-3 satisfactory, 4-5 good).

Further information

During the semester, an optional written test will be organised for students who already possess the language skills this course aims for. Those who pass the test will be exempted from the written communication part of the course. A test of oral skills will be organised by agreement for those who have worked in their own fields in a Swedish-speaking area for a minimum of six months.
