General description

Note, this course overlaps with two prior courses: Introduction to Information Visualization (Johdatus tiedon visualisointiin) and the original Information Visualization (Tiedon visualisointi), and cannot be taken by the students who have taken either of the earlier courses.

Learning outcomes

After taking the course the student
- has an overview of the field of information visualization and its history
- understands the information visualization approach and its place in the general context of human-computer interaction
- knows the most common visualization techniques and when to apply them
- has experience in writing academic lecture diaries and in reviewing them.

Contents

The course is about making information visible, and introduces selected topics in information visualization. The topics include, but are not limited to, the following: history of information visualization, principles of visual perception, information data types, visual encoding of data, visualization techniques, interaction techniques for information visualization, and human factors issues of information visualization.
