The student learns the basics of information seeking and is able to use the University of Tampere library in the manner which is essential to his/her main subject studies. The student is able to seek information from the information sources provided by the library and can utilize the services of the library. Upon completion of the course, the student is able to search for course books and books on a certain subject with the help of collection catalogues of scientific books. The student is able to search for journal articles in Finnish and foreign publications both in the journal collections of the library and in article collections available online.

A general overview of scientific sources of information, the basics of scientific information seeking, the basic ways of seeking information, the use of the services and publications provided by the library which are needed during the studies, the basics of evaluating and using literature.

A lecture, tuition in small groups, online studies.
Modes of study
a) a lecture, tuition in small groups, exercises or b) a passed test on information seeking skills, taken as an electronic exam at the times announced by the main library. Students must enrol on the exam beforehand. The test can only be tried twice.
