Learning outcomes

The course focuses on new literacies as socio-cultural phenomena emerging out of interactions facilitated by digital media. The objectives are i) to recognize types of new literacies, ii) to understand the history and future possibilities of new literacies, iii) to understand the technological underpinnings of new literacies, and iv) to conceptualize the impact of new literacies on everyday practices (such as education, democratic participation, working life, etc.). The course also gives tools for understanding research on new literacies and for evaluating literacy initiatives and campaigns.

Contents

The concept and phenomena of new literacy, the technological developments underpinning new literacies, changes in mentality, new literacies in school and education, critical literacy, literacy policies in information societies.
