Learning outcomes

To provide historic, economic and cultural context to international health and health policy development, describe how health can be measured in different settings, describe the role of different health determinants and major communicable and non-communicable diseases and to briefly describe how health care services are organized in different countries.

• Global and age-specific distribution of health and health determinants
• Millennium Development Goals and other international health policies
• Burden of globally most important communicable and non-communicable diseases
• Role of preventive and curative health interventions, basics of organizing heath care in different settings

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Numeric 1-5.
Active participation in seminars, participation in and completion of group exercises, oral presentation of own country profile, passing exam.

Further information

Attendance is open for all University of Tampere students but limited to 32 students. Preference is given to degree students in health sciences and others will be accepted in the order of registration. Degree students are required to take the complete course (6 ECTS).

Also available: Lectures in Health and illness in a global context, 2 ECTS. Unlimited attendance.
