The learning objectives for this course include gaining a sound grasp to the major conflict theories from psychology and related disciplines.
Contents
The theories of conflict relate both to interpersonal and intergroup conflicts. The processes of escalation, stalemate, and settlement will be considered. Models such as the dual concern model of approaches to conflict will be examined. The influences of cultural beliefs and value systems on conflict will be investigated. The work of seminal theorists such as Morton Deutsch, Dean Pruitt, Jeffrey Rubin, Donald Black, Charles Osgood, Musafer Sherif, Ervin Staub, Ronald Fisher, William Ury and others will be considered.

The course will involve a great deal of small group and whole class discussion activities. It is critically important for students to attend all class meetings for grades on in-class activities and exercises will constitute an important component of this course.
