Minimum level B2 (if students are unsure of their level in English, they are advised to take the DIALANG self-assessment test available at http://dialang.org/info/intro.htm). ISSS students scoring less than B2 on the Oxford Quick Placement Test are required to have successfully completed the Preparation for Academic Studies in English course before taking part in the course.
To make the students aware of the conventions involved in eff ective seminar participation. To enable students to defend and oppose statements of opinion using logically constructed argumentation. Preparation for seminars in the students' own fi elds of study. After successful completion of the course the students will be - aware of the conventions governing academic seminars - distinguish between statements of facts, opinions and feelings - be able to take part in a seminar debate, as defendant, opponent, chair and member of the audience - construct a chain of reasoned argument, linking ideas logically and providing appropriate evidence from external sources - write a seminar paper

The course will be made up of class sessions, out of class tasks and feed back sessions.

Recommended year of study
ISSS students should take the course in the first year of studies of their academic programme concurrently with the Introduction to Academic Writing course (if not exempted).
