Topic descriptions:
a) Intercultural Communication
Group discussions and tasks related to the themes of intercultural communication are a central part of the course contents. The group will visit a class in "Finnish as a Foreign Language" and prepare short oral and written presentations.
b) The Modern Troubadour
The course focuses on the productions of poets and composers who depict international, social and political situations in their work. Songs are examined in their birth context, for example in relation to their time and place of origin, their socio-cultural factors and their poetic and musical styles.
c) Cinema
Assignments, group discussions and classwork are based on film subjects. When watching films, students concentrate on what makes films good or bad, why they like them or don't like them, etc. No foreknowledge of the movie industry is required. In oral presentations, students describe their films of choice from their own points of view.
d) InterActing in English
The course improves students' communicational skills and strategies with the help of drama (improvisations, role playing, stories and exercises that will increase students' awareness). With the help of various exercises, students will improve their skills for spontaneous communication and learn how to express their thoughts through verbal and non-verbal communication strategies and hold presentations in English.
e) Creative Writing and Literature
The course improves students' English communicational skills with the help of "round table" discussions and short presentations, which are based on both original and existing literary sources.
