The student knows the principal philosophical currents of 20th century philosophy. S/he is also aware of their cultural and social context, of their background in modern philosophy, and of their interaction. The aim is also to understand the theoretical background of contemporary systematic questions.
Contents
The section gives an overview of different currents of philosophy in the 20th century, as well as of the thinkers and debates that are central to them. 20th century philosophy is presented against the background of 19th century philosophy. The student gets a general idea e.g. of phenomenology, logical empirism, analytical philosophy, pragmatism, marxism, existentialism, hermeneutics and deconstruction, and of their interaction. S/he is also familiar with objects of research that become important at the20th century, such as language, body, machines, practices.
