Course entry based on completion of basic and subject studies, any exceptions must be fully justified and will only be accepted on a discretionary basis.
All students enrolled on the course are expected to devote full-time to it.
Homework assignment 1 will be required for starting the course.
Genes and genome structure will be considered from both a functional and an evolutionary perspective.
Contents
The course will cover prokaryotic and eukaryotic gene organization, conjugating and non-conjugating plasmids, repetitive DNA, centromeres, telomeres, transposable elements, organelle genomes and programmed DNA rearrangements as well as an introductory overview of molecular evolution and evolutionary genetics. DNA replication, recombination and repair will be considered both mechanistically and from a functional standpoint.
