Level A English in upper secondary school, or equivalent skills (B1-B2 level of language competence). To achieve the required starting level, students may for example take an English prep course.
The objective of this course is to improve students' facilities to discuss current events in an academic context. After completing this study module, students will - be able to discuss matters concerning themselves, their studies and their own field - be able to interact with others, for instance in group work situations, discussions, presentations and debates - be aware of the cultural differences related to oral communication and know how to communicate in a manner appropriate to the situation - understand the dynamics of interview situations - recognise the linguistic structure of an interview - be able to interview people in different situations and use different interview styles - be able to analyse and assess interviews - be able to discuss issues concerning language and media These skills will help students in their studies and later in following their own field and improving professional international communication.
Contents
The course is in two parts: first students analyse the way reporters use English in interviews and while reporting news on TV and in radio. Then they prepare interviews and reports to be broadcast on Radio Moreeni. The course focuses on studying interviews and comparing different styles of interviewing and reporting. Practical assignments are realised through role play and reporting simulations presented and assessed in class. Radio programmes are prepared in groups of two or more, and each group is responsible for marketing their programme. Programmes will be discussed and assessed in class. - discussion on the characteristics of a good interview - analysing (introduction, interjections, clarifications, conclusion, etc.) different interviews (newspaper, TV, web, radio) - studying interview language (grammar and pronunciation – word order, transitions, follow-up questions, intonation, word stress) - conducting interviews in different situations - peer assessment and discussions on other students' work - writing down own perceptions in a learning journal
