The course requires good knowledge on the principles of molecular biology, particularly, of biosynthesis of DNA, RNA and proteins, i.e. the Crick's Central Dogma as well as protein structure-function relationship.
Molecular virology is a more advanced course on structure and functions of viruses partucularly on their molecular biology and genetics.
Osaamistavoitteet
The students learn to understand viruses as particles containing inside the capsid a nucleic acid genome that make them infectious. In addition, they will learn viral inbuilt developmental programmes, representing paradigms for the broader understanding of gene expression and development.
Sisältö
Bacteriophages, plant and animal viruses will be covered, but with an emphasis on major classes of pathogenic viruses exemplifying different mechanistic principles, including retroviruses, herpesviruses and picornaviruses. Regulatory circuitry, viral evolution, evasion of host defenses and vaccine development will also be addressed.
