After successful completion of the course, students will - understand and be able to produce simple general language in spoken and written forms - be able to cope with easy and simple communication situations - be able to tell about themselves and about their surroundings in, for example, Finland with simple sentences - be able to read and write the Japanese hiragana and katakana syllabograms more fluently

- grammar will be taught from the coursebook and from handouts, and there will be various structure exercises (e.g. oral communication and discussion, text and listening comprehensions and producing short texts) - familiarisation with the Japanese lifestyle and culture - Finland-related vocabulary and various exercises concerning Finland, in addition to the Japan-related exercises
