To introduce the students to the common characteristics of human language, and to the principles of structural analysis.
Contents
The lectures are divided into two parts. At the beginning, an overview of the common characteristics of human languages and the significance of language to individuals, communities and cultures is provided. There will also be a short introduction to the different branches and research approaches of linguistics. During the second part of the course, the students will be introduced to the basics of the structural description of language. The most important basic concepts of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics will be included.
Modes of study
Acceptable performances are based on class participation and an exam, or on a book exam taken on a general faculty examination day.
