Specialization in Bioinformatics

Learning outcomes

After completing the programme, the student can:
- explain the methodological basis of bioinformatics, computational biology, and systems biology.
- explain bioinformatics methods and their significance in different applications.
- perform analyses of various biological data types using common programming languages and data analysis tools
- interpret the results of the analysis in their biological context.

Content

The MSc programme in bioinformatics is taught entirely in English, and it is two years in duration, with an extent of 120 ECTS credits. The curriculum contains a module of methodological studies including computer science, mathematics and biology, an advanced module with in-depth focus on the methods and applications of bioinformatics. The advanced module contains the MSc thesis of 40 ECTS.

Bioinformatics applies methods of computer science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, and statistics to biological data from e.g. DNA, RNA or proteins. Bioinformatics is needed in modern biotechnological, biological and biomedical research and development, especially when dealing with large data sets produced by current high-throughput measurement techniques.

The degree provides you with skills you can utilize as a bioinformatician or biological data analyst and qualifies you to work in industry or continue your studies at the doctoral level.
