The overall goal is to gain understanding of how understanding of peace and peacemaking have changed during the past decade. The course introduces the development and major changes in ideals and practices of international peacemaking from the post-Cold War era. The focus will be, on the one hand, on change of practices of peacemaking but, on the other hand, on their theoretical and ideological basis. The students learn to recognize and critically discuss about peacemaking dilemma between international (peaceful) intervention to the end violent conflict and to build conditions for sustainable peace (good aims) and the ignorance of local ownership and practices (interventionist coercion). Special emphasis is given to Nordic peacemakers and Nordic model.
