General description

Objectives The aim of the course is to familiarize the students with the Kauppi (Medical) campus environment. It provides the students with a comprehension of different learning methods and other practical issues related to the studies. The students will also learn how to successfully plan their studies and to prepare a written personal study plan. 
Content

  • Introduction to the functions and university facilities at the Kauppi Campus
  • Introduction to the Tampere School of Public Health and University of Tampere Medical School
  • Introduction to the students, tutors and staff participating in teaching
  • Overview of course options
  • Student's rights and responsibilities. Information on plagiarism, roles and responsibilities of a student and a teacher and other issues that are related to the studying process
  • Introduction to the learning methods used in the curriculum (thesis, essay, learning diary, Problem Based Learning, exam)
  • Introduction to the Bologna process - a reform process aimed at creating the European Higher Education Area (EHEA)
  • Use of library and information seeking
  • Personal study plan

Modes of Study Lectures and site visits 17h, tutorials (problem based learning) 6h, practical exercises 4h, student's own presentations 4h, individual discussion with a teacher on the Personal Study Plan (HOPS) 1h, individual work on assignments 12h. Total student investment time 44h.
Requirements for completion Active participation in problem based learning exercises, completion of assignments, completion of a Personal Study Plan
Evaluation Pass/fail. The grade is given by the teacher responsible for the course, based on participation and completion of the assignments.

Attendance Attendance is open for all Tampere University students but limited to 32 students. If more students wish to take the course, preference is given to degree students to health sciences and others will be accepted in the order of registration.
Enrolment Registration is not required from Master of Health Sciences students. Other Tampere University students should register for the course on the internet at www.uta.fi/nettiopsu/. Deadline for registration is 24.08.2009
