Learning outcomes

- To familiarize the students with the UN Millennium Development Goals, their role in global social development, and MDG-related research carried out at the University of Tampere.
- To update the students’ knowledge on Global Development
- To increase the students’ ability to popularize science and to communicate messages about global social development

General description

- Background, rationale, and the political process that led to the Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

- The contents of each MDG

- Current progress in achieving the goals

- Introduction to the research projects related to the MDGs

- Overview of the global development targets after the MDG period

Weekly mentoring
Tue 21-Oct-2014 - 16-Dec-2014 weekly at 15.00-15.45, Atalpa building seminar room 142, Weekly mentoring Tuesday from 21.10. to 16.12. at 15.00-15.45 (note one exception below) in Atalpa building seminar room 142. These sessions are targeted those students who will be involved in blog writing or expert interviews on the indicated week. Each student attends only one of these sessions.

Weekly Moodle mentoring by the media consultant
Wed 22-Oct-2014 - 17-Dec-2014 weekly at 12.00-12.00, Within the Moodle platform, Media Consultant Elina Noppari will comment the plans of the groups that are responsible for the interview session and blog writing on the indicated week. The plans are posted to the Moodle platform right after Tuesday mentoring session.

Evaluation

Pass/fail.

Evaluation criteria

Lecture attendance (min 80%), preparation of questions for discussion with the researchers and external experts OR active participation in the group that updates MDG-UTA blog, participation in electronic group discussions.

Study materials

Course literature according to the suggestions by the teachers and the speakers. Besides journal articles and other reports, TED talks may be used as course material.
