Learning outcomes

The course will strengthen understanding of:
• Causes (natural, man-made) of humanitarian crises and disasters and their impact on people's health.
• Public health consequences of humanitarian crises caused by natural disasters, man-made disasters, wars or conflicts.
• Importance of disaster preparedness and response.
• Specific challenges of public health in complex emergencies.
• Environmental impact of disasters and humanitarian crises.
• Water supply and sanitation in extreme conditions.
• Management strategies of humanitarian crises situations with national and international efforts.

  • Introduction to humanitarian crises
  • History, trends and causes of humanitarian crises, Public health threats in humanitarian crises
  • Actors, collaboration and financing
  • International laws and human rights in humanitarian crises
  • Organizing health care in humanitarian crises: Disaster preparedness, Health care and crisis situation, Transition from relief to rehabilitation
  • Research and humanitarian crises

Study materials

Learning Methods:

  • Contact and web-based learning for students in Kuopio.
  • Only web-based learning for remote students.
  • Web-based learning includes studying of video-lectures and lecture notes, writing learning diary and exercises.
  • Successful completion of the course requires substantial amount of independent studying. Study material is provided during the course.
