After completing the course the student will understand:
• Variation and the rationale explaining differences in media organisations
• General requirements and expectations of managers across levels
• How development objectives are achieved in media firms
• Complexity of managing a community of employees in work cultures
Students will join Prof. Lowe in visiting two media firms in the Tampere area during the first semester of coursework. Students are required to keep a Learning Diary of all visits, not only this semester but throughout the sequence. The Learning Diary is submitted towards the end of coursework and reviewed by the professor. Students earn 1 ECTS in total. That is not a lot because the requirements are not rigorous and the point is to gain practical insight from the real world, not mainly to engage in academic terms. The precise companies and dates will be specified as the semester gets started. The most likely companies are Alma Media / Aamulehti and Rovio Tampere. The most likely dates are two of the following, although the exact dates and times will be confirmed.
16 Sept. from 13.30 – 16.00
23 Sept. from 13.30 – 16.00
7 Oct. from 13.30 – 16.00
12 Nov. from 13.30 – 16.00
3 Dec. from 13.30 – 16.00
Only for the degree students in Media Management programme.
