Advanced Studies in Human Technology Interaction (UTA) [Period I]

This course is implemented as a book exam in the electronic exam service.

Teaching
1-Aug-2017 – 31-Jul-2018
Periods: I II III IV
Language of instruction: English
Further information:

This exam must be taken before participating the Experimental Research in Interactive Technology course. Therefore, it is a good idea to take the exam early on.

The questions in the exam will look a lot like the chapter titles or subtitles within chapters in the book (they may even be exactly the same). The idea is that in the answer you should write a brief essay that describes the main issues in the topic indicated. Remember to include examples in your answers to show how you would apply the concepts in a particular situation. The idea of the exam is to test how completely you have learned the material in the book. Other material that is not mentioned in the book may earn points, but not with the same efficiency as the material in the book. If you are not familiar with book exams, you may find the instructions for preparing for book exams helpful (Finnish, English).

The exam is set up with a number of questions in the electronic exam service. The system will randomly display five questions to each student taking the exam. Only four of the questions may be answered. If there are five answers, I will disregard the BEST answer in grading. The idea is to give some choice in which questions to answer (i.e. you do not have to know the whole book perfectly to get a good grade). However, you must choose which questions you want to answer. Fishing expeditions with five answers will be punished as explained above.

For questions, contact course supervisor Deepa Vasara at deepa.vasara@staff.uta.fi.

Please note: in practice, this seminar is running continuously, and you can join the course also other times than September and January. Also, it is expected that you will participate in the seminar until you have finished your thesis.

Who can participate

If you are planning to start your thesis or already working with it and you aim to finish the thesis in approximately one year, this seminar is for you.

You do not need to have a supervisor when the seminar begins. The first thing in the seminar will be topic selection and supervisor assignment.

The seminar has montly meetings, each lasting two and half hours. In each meeting, every student makes a presentation of his/her work and progress. Templates for each meeting will be given in the moodle. In addition, all pariticpants need to return a draft version of their thesis before each meeting.

There will be four (autumn) + five or six (spring) meetings. In order to get credits, students need to return their thesis and participate in all meetings (absence can be compensated with a separate agreement beforehand). There is also a remote connection possibility.

This is a Moodle course, all communication takes place in the course Moodle.

Need inspiraton for thesis subject?

Have you already started planning your thesis? Do you need inspiration and ideas to come up with a reasonable thesis subject?

You are warmly welcome to find out about the HTI research and to get thesis subject tips from the professors and teachers.

Advanced Studies in Human Technology Interaction (UTA) [Period III]

Practical implementation:
The course covers different types of human-technology interaction including, e.g., virtual reality, augmented reality, tangible interaction, information visualization, public displays and wearable computing. For each type, an overview of past and current work from scientific literature is discussed and the concept of interaction technique works as the focal point throughout.

The course is graded pass/fail and passing the course requires the completion of weekly design and analysis exercises, giving a presentation on a given research paper, writing a blog post and participating in discussions during the meetings and on-line. Full remote participation is possible with per participant agreement. Meetings will be available on-line. Passing this part of the course will result in 5cu marking which can be expanded to 10cu by completing a project work where a prototype system is developed and evaluated. The project can be done during period IV, or with a special agreement, at later time.

Advanced Studies in Human Technology Interaction (UTA) [Period IV]

The most common human-centered design (HCD) methods are learned both in theory and practice. The methods are introduced and discussed in the weekly meetings and learned in practice during the course work in small design projects.

The student will learn the most common HCD methods and techniques, including techniques for gathering, modeling and analyzing user research data, methods for specifying and designing products and services, and principles of interaction and interface design, and prototyping. These include, among others, observation, interviewing, consolidating models for interaction, artifacts, physical and cultural models, affinity diagrams, personas, scenarios, sketching, storyboarding, wireframes, design patterns, interactive UI mock-ups etc.

This course is implemented as a book exam in the electronic exam service.

On this course, we dissect and discuss on academic papers (1-3 articles per session) on game design research, especially with a focus on game design epistemology, including seminal and relevant papers on other fields of design and design theory. Before each session, there is a preliminary task with a deadline. In order to pass the course, students need to meet the deadlines, participate to the sessions and conduct a literature review on pre-determined subjects at the end of the course.

Practical implementation in 2018:

This is an intermediate level programming course. The course is implemented in two parallel tracks: Java-based and web technology-based. Students can choose between the two tracks.

  • The Java-based track requires basic Java programmin skills (e.g., TIEP1, TIEP5, TIEA2.1). and graphical user interface programming is done using Swing UI library using NetBeans IDE.
  • The web technology-based track requires basic skills in JavaScript programming, HTML and CSS (e.g., TIETA9) and programming is done using React framework and Material-UI interface library.

The course grading is based on the completion of weekly programming exercises. Full remote participation is possible with per participant agreement. Lectures will be available on-line.

Passing this part of the course will result in 5cu marking which can be expanded to 10cu by completing a project work. The project can be done during the summer, or with special agreement, at later time.
