Proficiency Evaluation Test for Optional Studies

For exchange students a separate proficiency evaluation test will be organized. Information for exchange students

Minor subject students for English Language, Literature and Translation are selected based on a proficiency evaluation test.

The proficiency evaluation test is held on Thursday 24.8. at 12-14 in Päätalo A1. No enrolment is required. A maximum of 25 minor students are selected based on the exam.

A student can be exempted from the optional studies proficiency evaluation test on one of two grounds: 1. They have scored higher than the lowest scoring admitted candidate in the latest English degree programme entrance exam. 2. They have completed English basic studies in another Finnish university. To get an exemption marked contact the degree programme Study Coordinator, preferably before the proficiency exam.

This course offers you a flexible way to learn about American culture and get credits during the summer. The work consists of listening to a selection of podcasts, most taken from National Public Radio, This American Life, and The Moth, then reflecting (by which I mean writing) on the themes in the podcasts. In addition, there are a few research & reflect assignments.

The flexibility of the course should lend itself to a summer timetable. If your summer job involves a longish commute, you can listen to podcasts on your way to and from work. If you like hiking or running, you can listen while doing that (like I do). As you lie in your hammock in the back yard, you can ponder the themes and put together your own ideas and opinions. You will visit your computer on a regular basis to record those ideas and opinions in the form of reflections.

Contents

  1. Initial small research project on National Public Radio and the US media.
  2. Consumption of approximately 10 hours of podcasts that discuss different themes in US culture. There will be a number of required podcasts, but you will also discover and include podcasts of your own choosing.
  3. Final larger reflection on 1 of the themes in the podcasts

Enrollment and mode of study

Sign up for the course has been closed.

The self-study course will be conducted via Moodle.

You will need to have some kind of listening device and a tool for downloading podcasts.

Cultural diversity has been identified as one of the major issues of the 21st century on both local and global levels. Referring to to a range of cultural phenomena between and within societies and social groups, the concept can be linked to different forms of cultural encounters from peaceful coexistence and multicultural exchange to violent colonial exploitation and the contemporary fear of terrorism. However, cultural diversity does not simply exist; instead, it is narrated and mediated, sociohistorically and politically produced, and mobilised for various ends and goals.

This Studia Generalia lecture series takes a critical look at different realities and discourses of cultural diversity in Anglophone societies. English-language societies around the world exhibit notable ethnic, linguistic and cultural diversity due to their long history of colonialism, globalisation and human mobility. The course focuses on various forms of diversity in English-language societies both locally and globally; it offers perspectives on minority languages in the Anglosphere and varieties of English, analyses social identities on personal and collective levels, explores literary and cultural narratives of cross-cultural encounter and the geopolitics of diversity, and examines immigration and anti-diversity discourses.
