Intermediate Studies [Period II]

A hands-on introduction to advanced real-life data-analysis problems and to the use of computer packages for their solution. Teaching is in English and includes lectures, demos, and lab exercises. Pass requirements: active participation in labs, and submission of written solutions (in English or Finnish) to homework assignments by 18.12.2009. The course is open to students of Tampere University of Technology (TUT), University of Tampere (UTa), and University of Jyväskylä (JyU).

Teaching
30-Oct-2009 – 4-Dec-2009
Periods: II
Language of instruction: English
Period (7-Jan-2010 - 5-Mar-2010)
Other Studies [Period III]

The course gives an overview of statistics, its importance and use in different fields of science. Basic statistical concepts and descriptive statistics are introduced, as well as an elementary introduction to estimation and hypothesis testing is given. An introduction to a statistical software package is also included.

This course is intended primarily for the students of the Bachelor's and Master's programmes of the ISSS (International School of Social Sciences).

Teaching
11-Jan-2010 – 15-Feb-2010
Periods: III
Language of instruction: English
Intermediate Studies [Period III]

This course is intended for participants interested in the practical use of logistic regression (LR), with a focus on applications to epidemiology. The approach will be non-technical, with use of mathematics and algebra only as necessary. No previous experience with LR is required, and the course should be accessible to non-statisticians. However, it is highly desirable that students have some previous experience with basic statistical methods, and they should preferably be familiar with the basic ideas of linear regression.

This course is organized by Tampere School of Public Health and the Doctoral Programs in Public Health. See the course web page for more information.

Teaching
9-Mar-2010 – 12-Mar-2010
Periods: III
Language of instruction: English
Period (15-Mar-2010 - 14-May-2010)
Intermediate Studies [Period IV]

The course consists of two parts, Statistical methods in Clinical Trials and Analysis of Survival Data. Each part consists of ten lectures and one computer based practical session. Each lecture will last about 50 minutes, with a short break between lectures. Full printed lecture notes will be provided for Clinical Trials and for Survival Data. Assessment of both parts of the course is by 'take-home' examinations.

This course is organized by Tampere School of Public Health and Doctoral Programs in Public Health. See the course web page for more information.

This short course will cover the most commonly used statistical methods for analysing longitudinal data, including general linear models with various correlated random errors, such as compound symmetry, AR(1), exponential correlation, ante-dependence structures and so on, and linear mixed models or random effects models. Estimation methods and goodness-of-fit will be addressed in details. Real data from medical sciences and public health will be analysed for illustration. Statistical software R will be used in the teaching.
