The course focuses on the basics of presentation skills and academic public speaking. The topics of message structuring, message planning, visualization, argumentation, effective message targeting to various audiences and speech anxiety will be covered. The course includes practice speeches to both academic audiences and to other audiences through audio and visual media.

Introduction to Game Research (IGR) takes both theoretical and practical look on games. Although the course focuses on video games, the concepts and methods learned during the course can be applied to any kind of games. The course has three major themes for the seven lectures:

1. Games as formal systems, game types and different game genres
2. Usability and playability of games, game user experience
3. Game design, prototyping, playtesting, and evaluation methods

The course will introduce sustainable development framework. Sustainable development is studied with focus on concrete everyday life and policy issues such as food, energy, poverty and mobility.

The course provides real case studies as suitable examples for the challenges and opportunities for ICT and media education in developing regions. The course covers the theoretical design frameworks that are currently in use, as identified through research publications. Students will work in groups to study a current research paper on ICT4D / HCI4D, media education and present their understanding to the rest of the class.

There is a close connection between the life of a society and the lexicon of the language spoken by it. In Russia the discourse of power traditionally has an influence on the Russian discourse as a whole. In this course the discourse of power will not only be interpreted as the language of politicians, but also as a language of all pro-government newsmakers and celebrities, journalists, film-makers and even church hierarchs. Special attention will be paid to the key values and challenges declared by Putin’s regime and to its slogans and clichés. Also the discourse of the oppositionists will be discussed and it will be showed that they use almost the same techniques and the same clichés as pro-Putin propagandists turned upside down.

The course focuses on some common misconceptions about the Finnish language, its past and current situation. We also dispel myths about the Finnish way of communication, the status of various language varieties in Finland and the reputation of Finnish as a difficult language. This course will discuss where the stereotypes stem from, and you will reconsider your preconceptions about the Finnish language and the Finns.

• Content: During the course, the foundations, aims, and key concepts of multicultural and intercultural education will be explored. In addition, studies concerning multicultural study and work environments will be presented, discussed, and compared.
