Content

Biotechnology is a wide field of natural and technical science which generates knowledge and develops research methods and tools for the research, shaping, administration and utilization of biosystems. Biotechnology emanates from the basic natural sciences such as biology, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, genetics, chemistry, and physics, but in order to develop further it also needs quantifying sciences - mathematics, information technology and statistics. Biotechnology combines expertise in natural sciences and technical sciences with medical sciences with the aim of enhancing health and well-being.

Biotechnology is used extensively in the basic research of bio- and environmental sciences and medical science and their applications, for example in health care and the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Biotechnological applications are developed in virtually all fields of industrial production such as the medications and diagnostics industry, other biotechnology and chemicals industry, the foodstuffs industry and in the elimination of pollution problems emerging from production and in nanotechnology. Biotechnology can also provide novel biological and environmentally friendly solutions for the care of the environment and agriculture.

The particular strength of the programme lies in its direct contact to the Institute of Biomedical Technology (IBT) the high-quality research environment for biomedical cell and molecular biology in which the main fields of research are cancer, mitochondrial and signal processing research, bioinformatics, biotechnology and cell and tissue technology. Students on the programme will have the opportunity to participate in the course of their studies in the research groups of IBT; for some this opportunity will arise after the first year of studies through the so-called IBT summer stipends or the research funding of the research groups.

The aim of the education is to equip students with capability for expert tasks in the various fields of biotechnological applications (research, teaching, knowledge management, product development, marketing) in both public and private sectors, both at home and abroad. The education implements a genuinely innovative multi-disciplinary approach. Multiform teaching methods support the implementation of objectives regarding content. Some students will have the opportunity of taking studies abroad at co-operation universities.
