Tampere Universities Community carbon footprint in the year 2022 has been calculated and the trend is downward.
The carbon footprint of Tampere Universities Community has been calculated for the fourth time. Our carbon footprint has reduced since 2019. Systematic measures, however, are still needed to achieve the carbon neutrality by 2030.

Please see the carbon footprint report here:

Tampere Universities Community carbon footprint divided in different categories.
Carbon footprint of Tampere Universities Community in 2022. Procurement of services has been included in the calculation for the first time as a whole.

The carbon footprint of Tampere Universities Community in 2022 was about 20 300 t CO2 ekv. The share of Tampere University is about 15 500 t CO2 ekv (77,5 %) and Tampere University of Applied Sciences  4 800 t CO2 ekv (22,5 %). Procurement of goods and services, which were included in the calculation in full for the first time, created the biggest share of the total carbon footprint. Procurement of goods and services constitutes almost half of the total carbon footprint. If also procurement of IT and research infrastructures are included the share increases to about 70 %. The runners-ups for the biggest carbon footprint are travelling and management of properties.

Carbon footprint calculation is an important tool to reduce universities’ atmospheric emissions. It is, however, only an instrument. Distinct actions are also needed to reduce carbon footprint. Furthermore,  the community members need to be encouraged to use cleaner alternatives.” says Eveliina Asikainen, Senior Lecturer and chair of the TAMK sustainability working team.

The carbon footprint of travelling has increased, but still lower than before the Covid-19 pandemic. The carbon footprint of properties management has decreased remarkably since 2019. This is due to the use of carbon neutral electricity and greener district heating. The Facilities management of universities community is committed to EcoCompass environmental information system that requires continuous improvement and reduction of emissions of its operations. Furthermore, University rents majority of its properties from University Properties of Finland Ltd (SYK), which compensates the carbon emissions fully.

”Tampere University is preparing an action plan to develop the sustainability and responsibility development and achievement of carbon neutrality by 2030. Our common development needs are in the development in procurement criteria and travelling guidelines in the light of sustainability and responsibility. This work will be implemented together with the Tampere Universities Community members and stakeholders” comments Eeva-Liisa Viskari, Chief Specialist in sustainability at Tampere University.
