- Completion options
This option of Advanced Theme Studies in Education consists of two independent but thematically related courses that approach education – broadly defined – from international and multidisciplinary perspectives. The course entitled "Schooling and childhoods in socialist and post-socialist societies" looks at the development of education and institutions for children in the context of former socialist countries and the diverse and far from linear socio-political transformations that these countries encountered after the collapse of the Berlin Wall. The second course “De-centering the global” continues bringing to light the embeddedness of education in diverse contexts by problematizing the notion of globalization as a linear process of convergence from a number of disciplinary perspectives. Both courses enroll students across social sciences, offering everyone a unique opportunity to work with teachers and students from different disciplines. This cross-disciplinary cooperation helps to bring to light the importance of interrogating the knowledge production practices behind different representations of education.
