Opintojaksolla käydään läpi nykysuomeen johtanut historiallinen kehitys erityisesti kantasuomen aikana ja kantasuomesta eteenpäin. Painopisteinä ovat toisaalta itsenäiseen suomen kieleen johtaneiden muutosten ja toisaalta vanhan kirjasuomen tekstien tarkastelu ja analysointi.
